Efficient heat dissipation is a critical element of e-motor designs. The use of potting or impregnating resins can dramatically lower operating temperature, resulting in higher power output, longer motor life and better reliability. Motors potted with highly thermally conductive materials have been proven to achieve better performance than unpotted motors.
Huntsman offers a wide range of heat-conductive encapsulants for electric motors under the ARALDITE® brand, all of which meet the highest temperature endurance requirements of car manufacturers. ARALDITE® resin solutions deliver superior heat dissipation, and can reduce operating temperature up to 25% compared to standard impregnation technology. This enables designers to choose among several performance improvements: motor size can be reduced by up to 25%, continuous power can be increased by up to 25% or motor cost can be reduced by up to 30%.

It's a common maxim in the motor industry that every ten degrees of reduced operating temperature corresponds with a doubling of engine life. As the electric vehicle industry moves to 800-volt architectures, e-motors will be expected to be able to carry higher currents without overheating. Lowering the operating temperature of electric motors by using potting or encapsulation compounds offers other benefits as well, including higher power output and better reliability.
Tests confirm that motors potted with highly thermally conductive materials such as our range of ARALDITE® resins achieve better performance than unpotted motors. Hot spot temperatures of motors impregnated with high thermal conductivity materials are generally 40 to 45° C cooler than a varnish-only motor, and about 20° C cooler than a motor potted with a standard epoxy.
Sub-optimal potting materials may be subject to cracking. Our new generation of epoxy resin systems enables 100% shock resistance and 100% reduction in the risk of cracks.
In addition to greatly improving motor longevity, reducing hot spot temperature allows motor designers to increase maximum power/torque for a given motor size, or to decrease motor size for the required power/torque.
When e-motor producers use polyester or other material containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for stator impregnation, material is lost, resulting in higher material costs. Our epoxy is free of VOCs, which means it exhibits no loss of mass, and also delivers reduced costs for ventilation systems, cleaning and personal protective equipment. Furthermore, our epoxy 1k mono-component resin exhibits better adhesion to PEEK insulation, which improves motor performance and life.
